This program will cover the basics of patents and patent law. Expected topics include:
- What is a patent?
- What are the different types of patents, and how are they different from copyrights and trademarks?
- How can you get a patent?
- How much does it cost to get/keep a patent?
- Once you have a patent, what can you do with it?
- What are the benefits (and drawbacks) of applying for a patent?

Annmarie Dressler, Attorney, Finnegan
Heather Ren is a patent agent with Finnegan. Her practice currently focuses on (utility and design) patent prosecution/counseling, as well as post-grant proceedings. With her background in biomedical engineering, Heather leverages her skills and expertise in the mechanical and electrical arts to assist clients in protecting their innovations.
Annmarie Dressler is a third-year associate with Finnegan. Her work focuses on patent prosecution and litigation across the mechanical and electrical fields. Annmarie uses her insights as both a former patent examiner for the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and a licensed mechanical engineer to help understand her clients’ technologies and to create effective strategies.
