WALA Basics Workshop: “Creating a 501(c)(3)”

Thinking about starting a non-profit corporation?

This workshop will provide soup-to-nuts guidance for launching and maintaining a tax-exempt, nonprofit organization. Topics to be covered will include:

  1. Forming Your Organization: incorporation, the first organizational meeting, securing an employer identification number, setting up
  2. Understanding the Pros and Cons of 501(c)(3) Status:  charitable contributions, public support rules, unrelated business taxable income, restrictions on lobbying
  3. Securing Federal and State Tax Exemptions:  the Form 1023, fiscal sponsorships as an alternative to a stand-alone charity, related state registrations
  4. Ongoing Compliance Requirements:  maintaining adequate books and records, the Form 990, annual state reporting

The session includes a presentation, Q & A, and an opportunity to network.

Facilitator: Thomas B. Reems is a Partner in the Washington DC Offices of Squire Patton Boggs. He is a corporate lawyer assisting companies, investors and lenders with a variety of transactions. His work involves mergers, acquisitions, private equity, project financing, infrastructure, leveraged buyouts and debt financing. He also represents institutional investors in direct investments and co-investments and advises them on cross-border structuring, compliance and regulatory issues.
